Made in Europe describes Modu Drawer's manufacturing footprint: every module is 3D-printed at print facilities within the UK and EU. The choice is structural — short shipping distances, EU food-contact certifications, and a manufacturing model where the product is made closer to where it ships than the global injection-moulding industry standard.
Why Europe-located printing matters
- Short shipping distance. A UK customer order ships from a UK or near-EU print facility — typical transit 1–3 days within the UK, 3–5 days for European delivery. No transatlantic or Asia–Europe freight.
- EU material standards apply. The PLA filament used meets EU regulation 10/2011 for food-contact materials (see food-grade certification). The same standard applies in the UK post-Brexit.
- Print quality control. Modules are inspected at the print facility before despatch. Failed prints (less than 3%) get recycled at source rather than shipped and returned.
- Shorter feedback loop. When a customer reports a fit issue, the print facility can adjust within days, not weeks.
What "made in Europe" doesn't claim
- Net-zero carbon. Manufacturing still emits — printing energy, transport, packaging. Made in Europe reduces transport emissions vs imported product but isn't zero.
- UK-only sourcing. The PLA filament supply chain is European, not exclusively UK. Plant-derived raw materials (corn, sugarcane) often originate outside Europe.
- Higher unit cost. European labour and energy cost more than Asian equivalents. The made-in-Europe choice trades unit cost for the structural advantages above.
How it compares to alternatives
The dominant drawer-organiser supply chain runs through Asian injection-moulding factories shipping bulk inventory to UK warehouses. The model is cheap per unit but high in transport miles, low in customisation, and tied to one drawer size per mould. Made in Europe + made on demand is a structurally different model: higher unit cost, lower transport miles, custom fit per order.
