Drawer length

Drawer length is the front-to-back internal measurement of a kitchen drawer — wall to wall along the axis the drawer slides on. UK kitchen drawers typically run 30 to 60 cm internal length, with deeper cabinets (especially under-counter ones) running up to 70 cm.

What length decides

  • How many cells deep. A 32 cm length fits an 8-cell-deep base (8 × 4 cm = 32 cm); a 40 cm length fits a 10-cell-deep base.
  • Whether long rolls fit. Cling film and foil ship in 30–45 cm boxes; the drawer length needs to be 32 cm minimum for the standard roll. Shorter drawers handle short-roll versions.
  • Whether spatulas and ladles fit. Long-handled tools sit along the length axis. A 35 cm spatula needs at least 36 cm internal length.

Common gotchas

The drawer-front panel often overhangs the actual drawer box by 2–4 cm. Measure inside the drawer, not at the cabinet face. Most UK drawers have a small gap at the back too (so the drawer closes flush) — the back wall is sometimes recessed a few centimetres from the cabinet rear.

Kitchen drawers also vary by run direction: most slide front-to-back, but some corner units have drawers that open along their narrow axis, swapping length and width relative to the cabinet face. Always measure internal dimensions, not cabinet dimensions.

Where it fits in the system

The drawer builder takes length, width, and depth and picks the closest grid base. See drawer width for the other axis and drawer depth for whether stacked tiers are an option.
