Standard vs. True to Size: getting the perfect drawer fit

A guide to how the moduDrawer builder sizes your drawer — and how to choose the right fit for you.

TL;DR — Every moduDrawer build is made from modules on a fixed 29.5 mm grid. A Standard build rounds your drawer down to whole grid blocks, so it leaves a small gap against the wall but every module stays interchangeable. True to Size custom-extends the modules along your wall so they sit perfectly flush — at the cost of those edge modules no longer being standard, swappable pieces. The builder shows you exactly what each option fills before you add to cart.

Why drawer size matters: the 29.5 mm grid

moduDrawer organisers are a system. Every module — trays, cutlery holders, utensil bins — is built on a 29.5 mm grid so the pieces line up, lock together, and can be rearranged into any layout you like. That shared grid is what makes the system modular: a 2×3 tray and a 3×3 bin always meet cleanly, and you can pull a module out and drop it somewhere else whenever your needs change.

The trade-off is that real drawers aren't exact multiples of 29.5 mm. A drawer that measures 525 × 585 mm doesn't divide evenly into the grid:

525 mm ÷ 29.5 mm = 17.8 blocks  →  17 whole blocks  =  501.5 mm
585 mm ÷ 29.5 mm = 19.8 blocks  →  19 whole blocks  =  560.5 mm

So the modules fill 501.5 × 560.5 mm, leaving roughly 23.5 mm along one wall and 24.5 mm along the other. That leftover space is where the two fit options differ.

Standard build (the default)

A Standard build uses whole grid blocks and rounds your drawer down to the nearest block on each side.

What you get

• Modules fill the converted size (e.g. 501.5 × 560.5 mm for a 525 × 585 mm drawer).
• A small gap — anywhere from nothing up to ~29 mm — sits between the last row of modules and the drawer wall.
• Every module is a standard grid size. They stack, swap, and rearrange freely, now and in the future.

Best for

• Anyone who likes to reorganise their drawer over time.
• Drawers where a small edge gap doesn't bother you (you can also nudge the layout to centre it, or park a thin item in the gap).
• Buying extra modules later that need to fit the same grid.

In the builder, a Standard build shows a readout like:

Modules fill 501.5 × 560.5 mm · 23.5 × 24.5 mm gap to wall

and your cart shows the converted size — the space the modules actually occupy — so there are no surprises.

True to Size (flush fit)

Choose True to Size and we custom-extend the modules sitting against your drawer wall so the last row/column stretches to fill the leftover gap. The result sits perfectly flush — no gap, edge to edge.

What you get

• Modules fill your full drawer size (e.g. 525 × 585 mm).
• A clean, built-in look with nothing rattling against the walls.
• The cart clearly marks the build True to Size.

The trade-off (important)

• The extended edge modules are no longer standard grid sizes. Because they've been stretched to your exact drawer, they won't stack with standard modules, and can't be rearranged into other positions in the grid (they only fit the spot — and the drawer — they were made for).
• The interior modules are unchanged and stay fully modular; only the wall-adjacent pieces are customised.

Best for

• Larger drawers where the gap is more noticeable.
• A fixed, finished layout you don't plan to reshuffle.
• Anyone who wants the tightest possible, no-gap fit.

How to choose

Ask yourself two questions:

1. Will I rearrange this drawer later? If yes, lean Standard — keeping every module swappable is worth a small edge gap.
2. How big is the gap, and does it bother me? The builder shows the exact gap for your drawer. If it's only a couple of millimetres, Standard is effectively flush already. If it's 20 mm+ and you want it gone, True to Size is the cleaner finish.

There's no wrong answer — both are made to the same quality. It's purely about whether you value flexibility (Standard) or a flush, finished fit (True to Size).

FAQ

Does the builder show me the difference before I buy?
Yes. As you set your drawer size, a readout next to the dimensions shows the converted size and the exact wall gap. Toggle True to Size and it updates to a flush fit. Your cart then shows the matching size — converted for Standard, full size (with a 'True to size' badge) for True to Size.

Can I mix the two?
Each drawer build is one or the other. The interior modules are always standard; True to Size only customises the pieces touching the wall.

If I choose True to Size, can I still add modules later?
You can always add standard modules to the open/interior areas. The extended edge pieces, though, are made for your exact drawer, so treat those as permanent fixtures rather than swappable parts.
